How To Prep Before A Move

Packing a box with tape

If you are moving, it can be one of the most stressful things to do in life. You have to organize, set aside time, and go through the process of moving. This is not to mention actually moving to a new location and making new friends and neighbourhoods or even changing jobs. So here are some solid tips to help you prep beforehand:

Prep Your Items

Start with the essential items in your home. Your valuables are worth more than money to you. While you can replace other things, you want to keep these safe from breakage, scratching, or going missing. Therefore, wrap them up with blankets, bubble wrap, and other protection. Also, be sure to label them clearly. In addition to fragile items in your home, you should also take care to prep food items for the move. If you’re planning to place food in storage, then plan to vacuum seal items using mylar bags. When transporting food items, make sure that all containers are sealed and secure to prevent a mess while moving.

Make a List and Check it Twice

Once you have prepared your valuables, your job still isn’t complete. Be sure to inventory every single one of them. If nothing else, keep a list of the most important things that you want to make sure you don’t lose. It can be helpful to also note what the label on the box is to help you identify it quickly without having to unpack everything. That way you can compare it from before and after the move to be sure you have everything.

Research a Moving Company

If you are using a moving company, which you should because of the time and energy they save you, then you need to do your research. Make sure they have good reviews and are friendly and professional. The type of move that you are making, whether it is long distance, across town, or if the movers are only helping you pack, will determine how much it costs and how much you tip them, so make sure you are aware of all the costs and variables involved.

Line Up Your Bills and Services

When you move, you often change area codes and zip codes. This means a lot of your bills are going to change at least where they are sending your information. From your bank to your phone line and to your insurance, different companies will want to have your updated information. Make sure you also notify the post office of your new address. This will help you get everything to the right place.

Ask For Time Off

In an ideal world, moving would be a short process only involving less than a day. That way you could get it done on your weekend. However, often times surprises pop up. Give yourself extra time to take care of shopping for new items, unpacking, and other moving activities.

No one said moving was easy, but it can certainly be made easier. If you use the tips above, you can prepare your move so that it goes wonderfully without a lot of the common pitfalls that other people suffer. Then, you’ll be able to enjoy your new home in peace and know that your most prized possessions are safely there with you.
