How to Transform Your Drafty Home Into a Cozy Retreat This Season

Summer is on its way out and winter is on its way in. If you live in a drafty house, that could be a problem. You could choose to just deal with the cold, but that gets pretty miserable, and quickly too. Instead, take action to transform your house into a cozy retreat for the winter.

Seal Up Your House

The first thing you should do to reduce the draftiness of your house is make sure it’s properly sealed. Take a walk around the inside and outside of your house. Are your windows properly sealed and insulated? Or are there cracks around them that are letting the warm air escape? How’s the weather stripping on your doorway? Is your insulation adequate? If any of these things are sub par, you’re losing heat and money. By fixing these problems, your heating system won’t have to work as hard to keep your house warm. This means you could be in for some nice savings on your next power bill.

Use a System of Heaters

Some houses don’t have a central heating system. If yours is one of them, you may need to get a bit more creative with how you heat your house. Depending on your circumstances, you may not need to heat your whole house all the time. Sometimes it’s enough to just heat a few rooms. Fireplaces, whether gas, wood, or electric can add both warmth and ambiance. If that’s not something you want to do, space heaters might be a good option. They can be very effective, but you’ll need to be careful when you use them. While they don’t emit dangerous fumes, space heaters pose a fire hazard around flammable cloth and rugs.

Add Cozy Furnishings

Once you’ve taken care of the draftiness, you need to make your house cozy and comfortable. Area rugs, comfy couches and chairs, and piles of blankets can be great for amplifying the coziness of your living space. Thick, thermal window drapes can do double duty by adding additional insulation while also making your space look and feel cozy too.

Your home is arguably the place where you should be the most comfortable, no matter what the season is or what the weather is like. If your house is drafty, seal it up, take advantage of heaters, and consider adding some cozy furnishings. You’ll transform your house from being drafty into your own personal cozy retreat in no time.
